Build the Business That Runs Without You

If the operation stops when you take a week off, you own a job with extra risk. The goal is a machine with a coach standing next to it.

Founders describe wanting freedom. Most of them are building a structure that makes freedom impossible, one small decision at a time.

The test

Take a week off and count the things that broke. That list is the business's real architecture — the parts that still live inside your head.

A business that needs you in every room is not a business. It is a very demanding client.

What to document first

  • Every decision that came back to you twice in the last month.
  • Every process that exists only as a habit.
  • Every approval that would be just as safe one level down.

Then hand over one item a week, with the standard written down. Within a quarter the week off stops being an experiment and becomes a normal cost of doing business well.
