Money Is a Structure, Not a Number

Earning more does not fix a structure that leaks. It just makes the leak bigger and better disguised.

Most people I meet want a bigger number. What they need is a different structure, because the number is a symptom and the structure is the cause.

The three questions

I ask the same three things, in this order, before anyone tells me their income:

  1. What happens to the first ten percent of everything you earn?
  2. What did you buy in the last ninety days that is still worth what you paid?
  3. If your income stopped on Friday, how many months would you keep the life you have?

Almost nobody can answer the third one, and the hesitation is the answer.

Wealth is not what arrives. It is what stays, and what it is allowed to become.

A structure you can build this month

Automate the first ten percent out of reach on the day income lands. Then set a review on the calendar — quarterly, not daily — so the money is managed on a schedule instead of in a mood. That is the whole thing. It is unglamorous, and it works while you are asleep.
